Medieval Fashion?

Finding balance between my love for the past and the present is the key, of course. How many of you can say your life is balanced? If it’s not balanced, what will you do to get there? The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo found balance in her dress—ignoring the trends of her day, she wore  traditional Mexican clothing, sometimes fused with modern styles.

I like to do this with pioneer-style clothing. I can wear a comfortable modern top (no corsets!) with a long skirt and petticoat and my granny boots. The 1800s were recent enough I can pull this off, but I haven’t yet gotten the courage to wear medieval gowns out in public. My passion lies more in the Medieval times. Some day maybe I’ll figure out how to fuse Medieval styles with modern styles. I have one top that does this fairly well:

And tunics are in right now, which are very medieval:

Actually, the catalog Newport News regularly has beautiful clothing which fuse medieval styles with modern trends.

But even this is not enough for me. When I’m in my medieval mood, I just want to wear medieval gowns. I just got some embroidered material from JoAnn’s Fabrics which I plan to sew into a medieval gown to wear to the Rennaissance Festival this summer. My hope is that I’ll get the courage to wear it around everywhere else as well. How many of you out there don unusual clothing which goes against modern fashion? What kind of reactions do you get? I’d love to hear from you!

How about just wearing odd clothes in general?  I have a beautiful outfit from Africa.  It's a rich purple with lush cream embellishments all down the front edges of the "jacket".  It's stunning, but certainly not the style of the day.  I've worn it some, but when I went to wear it to my daughter's wedding it was vetoed by my husband.

It would seem to me that the medieval tops paired with jeans or more modern pants would not cause too much of a stir, but would allow you a certain amount of fun.

That being said, I have a friend who has a style we call "wedding casual", by which I mean that she looks as if she were ready for a old south garden party wedding at all times.  She is fully made up with false eyelashes, long false nails, elegent upswept wigs at all times, and wears elaborate clothing at all times.  She is a ruffled and lace old Hollywood star.

It makes her feel beautiful.  If what you wear makes you feel beautiful and you are utterly gracious and kind, compassionate and fun-loving, your friends may shake their heads, but they will smile and look at you with affection and admiration for being you!
