My love for the Middle Ages and adventure comes out in just about everything I do. For example, this summer I decided to plant some vegetable garden beds out back. But why just make several squared plots, when I can design those plots into a maze? So I drew out my maze garden in a Microsoft Word document, 18’x18’, and laid it all out in the back yard. The outside edges will all have tall plants, such as sweet corn, popcorn and sunflowers, with beans twining up the stalks. The central plots can have everything else, including special plots for each of my four children. For the paths I laid out straw.
Unfortunately, I ran into delays in carting in good soil from my friend’s goat farm, so only 1/3 of it is actually planted. But in the other plots, where I spread kitchen compost, there are a bunch of seedlings coming up which look like something edible; perhaps they are melons or sunflowers--only time will tell. If I can get the rest of my good dirt brought in this summer or fall the maze will be all ready for full planting next spring. But this is how it looks right now, with corn, sunflowers, beans, salad greens and weeds coming up:
