Living Like a Pioneer—The Dining Room

Okay, in a one-room pioneer cabin, there really isn’t a dining room. It’s just a small table, hopefully big enough for the whole family to sit and eat together. The pioneer family might have a pretty tablecloth, to adorn the table when not in use for meals, and perhaps a small vase of flowers on top of that. The pioneers had a few simple dishes, not two different sets. It is cozy to have the dining table right in the kitchen area (except in the heat of summer!).

To simplify your dining area and accouterments, try one of these challenges:

LEVEL I:         Have only one set of dishes and silverware. If they are pretty, they will do for everyday and company. Your guests will be more interested in the meal and in you than in your plates anyway.

LEVEL II:        Simplify your extra-ware. You could probably do just fine with only 1-2 serving trays, 1-3 serving bowls, etc. Who really needs a punchbowl anyway? A pretty pitcher will do just fine. If you have a small teapot with a large-enough spout, it will keep your gravy hot longer and you can get rid of that gravy boat. You can serve soup right out of the pot it was cooked in.

LEVEL III:       If you really want to be authentic, get rid of more and keep the bare minimum. Make or buy a tablecloth and cloth napkins to use every day. Have only one set of teacups and saucers, not teacups in addition to large mugs. Get rid of all those little fancy gadgets and use simple tools such as wooden spoons. Keep only one set of wineglasses, or, just use your everyday glasses for wine, for a change.
