The other day I was reminiscing, and I remembered several treasured moments we had as a family when we did two Konos unit studies. Konos is a Christian-based homeschool curriculum, which is set up as unit studies based on godly character traits, such as Honor, Patience, Obedience, Attentiveness, etc. A couple of years ago, while homeschooling, we tried out two of the units from Obedience. One was about Light, and the other about Horses.
Doing those units together was amazing. In learning about Light, we studied Bejamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, and how God is our light at all times. We learned about life without electricity. We made our own colorful wax candles, then spent an entire evening using no lights but the candles, sort of like in pioneer days. It was an unforgettable experience. You wouldn't believe how little light candles give out!
When we learned about horses, we read many books written by Marguerite Henry, such as Misty of Chincoteague, Justin Morgan Had a Horse, Brighty of the Grand Canyon, Mustang--Wild Spirit of the West, etc. Her books are so good, and give us some history to boot. We also studied many different breeds, each choosing our favorite, then putting up temporary outlines on the wall showing the height of each breed. To this we compared the height of Aslan as mentioned in A Horse and His Boy, which we were reading aloud. Did you know that Aslan is about as tall as a horse? That's a HUGE lion!
We learned the parts of a horse, too, and together colored in a detailed color-by-number picture of a horse. Lastly, as a family we all took a horse-back riding lesson together. That was so much fun!
Such warm, endearing emotions rushed over me as I remembered these adventures we had with Konos. It was then that I started considering going back to homeschooling full-time in the Fall. (We already homeschool part-time over the summers.) I've tried many curriculums over my homeschooling years, but none gave me the memories or adventures which Konos did. We'll use it as our main curriculum this time. I'm ready for more family adventures!
