My Favorite Luxury Snacks

Okay, here are some of my favorite food pleasures throughout my day, and none of them make me gain any weight. As the French say, a little goes a long way. (The French said that, right?)

  • Dark Chocolate Chips. I get Giradelli's 60% cacao bittersweet chips at Sam's Club. All I need is about 1/4 cup of these, and I eat them one at a time, letting each one slowly melt in my mouth. If you have a few whole almonds to go with them, that's even better!
  • Whole Grains with Real Whipped Cream. Okay, stop buying whipped cream. Buy whole whipping cream instead, and your life will never be the same. It takes just a minute to whip up a cupful in your blender, with a teaspoon or so of sugar added. It will keep in your fridge for at least a week--and will be eaten up in that time. One of my favorite snacks is a whole-grain cereal, such as GrapeNuts or Frosted Mini-Wheats, with whole milk, and a generous dollop of fresh whipped cream on top. Another treat is whole-grain toast, with some all-fruit jam on top, and some whipped cream spread on top of that. (You'll also use the whipped cream in your coffee, on fresh or frozen berries, on desserts, waffles, etc.)
  • A Good-Quality Coffee. I started drinking coffee with Gevalia, and now can only tolerate good-quality coffees. Which means that much of the time, I make my own, instead of buying it at cheap restaurants. For an excellent brewing method, see my post on cold-brewing. Don't have a huge mug of coffee--return to the old-fashioned regular-sized or demi-tasse cup. I love mine with some real half-and-half, a bit of sugar, and a dollop of fresh whipped cream on top.
  • Celery and Peanut Butter. I had to add at least one veggie in here. Celery with peanut butter is yummy and healthy, easy and fast. And the crunch is wonderful!
