- Mark out the outline of the bed, after you’ve figured it out on paper. You can lay out some of the loose bricks as the outline.
- Using a trowel or a narrow spade, carefully dig a 2-3” trench about the width of the bricks, following the outline you made. Smooth out the bottom of the trench, making it fairly level with your hands. While digging, pile up the extra dirt in the middle of your raised bed.
- Fill the trench up to ground level with either sand or tiny pebbles.
- Start laying in your bricks, one at a time. Using a level, check each brick and adjust it as needed so that it is level. Keep adding your first layer of bricks, carefully leveling each one.
- Now smooth the dirt you have piled up in the bed, and press it up against the first layer of bricks you have, all around the inside of the bed.
- Neatly add your second layer of bricks. With these, you will indent the bricks slightly into the garden bed, so that about 3/4” of the brick rests on top of the dirt inside the bed. This will stabilize the low wall you are building. You can use the level with this second layer of bricks if you wish, but we just added them on top of the others.
- Fill in the bed to the top with soil and you’re ready to go!
